Devnari and Whitehorn Digital’s Newt jedan is currently in Early Access on Steam. The game has been available on Valve’s digital distribution service since February of this year. However, they announced that you can currently pick up a digital copy of Newt jedan for PS4 and Xbox One as well, with a Nintendo Switch release scheduled to arrive on September 12th.

The news was accompanied by a brand new launch trailer, outlining the general premise of the game, where you hop around across whimsically colorful environments basked in monotone colors. I have to say that the game has a certain kind of charm about it. It feels like a throwback to those kooky PS2 Japanese games we used to get every once in a while. A niche puzzle-platformer that didn’t fit into the typical corporate mold designed to chase after those Hollywood-blockbuster dollars.

The simplicity of the design and the off-kilter approach to the art-style certainly helps it stand out from other games out there. Art-wise it reminds me a little bit of a mix between Nights: Into Dreams i Viva Pinata.

The palette seems to borrow heavily from Mexican folk art, while the level designs are themed around hexagonal platforms hovering above nondescript sky boxes.

The game is described as a non-linear 3D platformer, and it features four unique worlds to conquer that each contain six different levels, while 165 achievement badges are sprinkled throughout the adventure for those who want to challenge themselves and acquire everything.
