Throughline Games and the Square Enix Collective released a new trailer for the upcoming anime adventure title, Forgotton Anne. The game is set in a dark and mysterious spirit world, where Anne and another human must attempt to escape from the land of the forgotten.

The game looks more like an animated movie than anything you would typically expect from an adventure title. It’s actually played out via side-scrolling segments, puzzles and platforming, not unlike Izvan ovoga svijeta or Srce tame. Obviously, this is the sort of game that will greatly appeal to those like games such as Limbo i male noćne more.

We don’t get to see much of the gameplay, but what little we do see intertwines with the cinematics in a seamlessly fluid way. You can see what Forgotton Anne looks like with the announcement trailer below.

This game looks absolutely stunning.

It appears as if the characters are hand drawn. I was sort of hoping they would have used Arc System Works’ cel-shaded 3D per-pixel rendering technique to make the 3D characters look like they were hand drawn, but either way this game looks fantastic.

Story wise, it revolves around Anne and the d man attempting to get home after being trapped in the land of the forgotten – a place where forgotten and missing objects go. They had spent their time there maintaining order after getting trapped, but certain events set into motion a need to escape and get back home.

It’s impossible not to see the clear and conspicuous homage to Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

I’m really curious to see how well this game develops, because if it can smoothly mix the cinematics and gameplay together – and if the gameplay is actually intriguing and fun – then Throughline Games could have a real winner on their hands.

Forgotton Anne is due for release late in 2017 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game is currently being demoed at this year’s GamesCom in Cologne, Germany.
